Papa John's takes a shot at MLB, offers players jobs in new campaign

Written By: Jovan Popovic

Monday was a difficult day for baseball fans around the globe, as MLB commissioner Rob Manfred officially announced his decision to cancel the first two series of the regular season as a result of the lockout. So naturally, fans took to social media to voice their displeasure with the rather unpopular commissioner, but they weren’t alone in taking shots at the league.

Pizza giant Papa Johns didn’t hesitate to launch their latest campaign, offering new positions for players who need work during the lockout. The campaign quickly took off in the baseball world, even garnering responses from reigning world series champions Joc Pederson and Dansby Swanson, who jokingly suggested that they might just apply!

The most interesting part of this advertising campaign comes in their support for the players. A vast majority of baseball fans have appeared to have sided with the players, so it seems logical for any company's advertising campaign to do the same and appeal to the largest crowd. However, Papa Johns is a different story.

It’s somewhat surprising to see the pizza company side with the players. As of 2019, Papa Johns has been the official pizza of Major League Baseball and has installed itself into many Major League stadiums. So it’s ironic to see them take a shot at the league despite being one of their major sponsors, and it’ll be interesting to see if it has any kind of effect on their relationship going forward.
